Olympic Gold Medalist Comes Out of the Closet

Australia’s four-time gold medalist swimmer, Daniel Kowalski made a bold public statement today by letting the world know that he was gay.  He said that he was tired of “living a lie” and was sick and tired of having to live a closeted life (pun or no pun intended?).  He said that he hopes others who are gay will now use his coming out as a reason to no longer be ashamed of what or who they are.   I’m not really sure why one of Australia’s greatest Olympic athletes ever felt the need to hide the fact that he was gay.   I guess it could have something to do with the fear of being shunned by the millions of Aussies who have supported him over his career, but honestly society today is much more accepting of homosexuality.  I’m glad to see that this burden was removed from his shoulders and I’m hopeful that in no way this announcement will cast a shadow over his glorious career.  Does the fact that Daniel Kowalski is gay in any way taint or diminish his four Olympic gold medals?  Should it?
