Crash & Burn for West Virginia’s March Madness Hopes

Maybe the title of this article is a little cheesy, perhaps a little quirky, some might find it funny or others might find it pretty pathetic depending on if you know what I am referring to or not. One thing I can promise is that Bob Huggins and the West Virginia basketball fans find it none of thee above, but instead downright sickening.   Why?  Well it could have a little something to do with the team losing its starting point guard, Truck Bryant to a broken foot during a morning practice that has now flattened their chances of getting to the NCAA Final Four.  After winning the Big East Tournament, there wasn’t a team that had more momentum entering March Madness than the West Virginia Mountaineers.  Now the team will rely heavily on the inconsistent Joe Mazzulla to replace the 9.3 points, 3.1 assists and 2.2 rebounds that Truck gave them a game.

If someone were to ask head coach, Bob Huggins who he could least afford to lose in the big dance, he would undoubtedly first say Da’Sean Butler and then Truck Bryant’s name would surface next. Yah, that’s how important Truck is to the West Virginia team.  This doesn’t mean Huggie Bear (Bob Huggins) should cancel the game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York.  However, it does mean that the Mountaineers will look for increased production from role players Devin Ebanks, Kevin Jones and Wellington Smith.  Either way this loss is absolutely devastating for West Virginia as they head into their Sweet Sixteen match-up with the overall more athletic, deep Washington Huskies who most thought wouldn’t have even made the tournament if it hadn’t been for them winning the Pac-10 conference tourney.  Now, the Huskies have to be licking their chops at this great opportunity for an Elite Eight birth thanks to this Godsend from above.

The Sports Mole believed that even before this injury to Truck Bryant, the West Virginia Mountaineers were in for an absolute dog fight with the Huskies; but now I think this blow will end up costing the Mounties their season. If for some reason they prove me wrong and beat the Huskies, the next mountain they would have to climb to get into the Final Four would likely be Kentucky and their fabulous freshman Eric Bledsoe, John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins. Yah, well don’t see the basketball Gods answering that miracle, but hey it was a good run!
