Conflict of Interest Developing in Roethlisberger Case?

Posted: March 13, 2010 in General Sports, NFL

He’s good looking, rich, an NFL pro bowler, a two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback, a flip flopper, in over his head and now receiving inside help from Georgia police?   Yes, I am referring to Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger who is attempting to clear his good name now for the second time in two years on sexual assault allegations.  The allegations emerged last week when an underage college student at a local Milledgeville, Georgia bar claimed that Ben sexually assaulted her in the bar’s bathroom.  Since then the young lady has dropped out of school and moved home to live with her parents as scrutiny and enraged Big Ben fans have made her life a living hell.  Is this really fair to her?  If the allegations are true, why should she be subjected to this type of harassment when she is simply stating her side of the story?  Let’s take a second to slow down and not anoint this woman as the second coming of Hester Prynne from the Scarlet Letter.  After all she is the victim at this point of the investigation.  Right?

What needs to get more attention in this sexual assault investigation that is why Milledgeville police were seen taking pictures with the Steelers’ quarterback the night the alleged assault took place?  Say cheese!  Just as soon as the officers were done posing with Big Ben they were asked to question him an hour later about the allegations.  Oh yah, did I forget to mention that one of the officers in the picture was also the person to take the written report from the alleged victim?  Psh, hey Ben thanks again for that picture, the wife and kids will love it.  But, anyways did you engage in sexual activities with this girl?  Are we serious?  Honestly, how is this acceptable on any level?  Pretty sure that’s called a conflict of interest.  If I am this girl, I am in a no win situation and it will only continue to get worse.  We all know that the women in these types of situations have it far worse than the accused male.  Terms this young lady will become familiar with from ongoing spectators will be whore, slut, etc.  Simply not fair!

When Milledgeville police chief Woodrow Blue was asked about the situation he responded by saying, “The officers were actually approached by someone in Mr. Roethlisberger’s party who came up to them and asked them if Mr. Roethlisberger could get his photo taken with the law enforcement agents.”  Simply laughable!  Is it possible Ben was trying to use his fame and fortune to make good with the officers in an attempt to get them to side with him?  If so, mission accomplished.  I heard that if a terrorist comes and asks to take a picture with police officers, they will allow him to blow up anything as well.  There is a time and place for everything, but this was neither!  I am sure the lawyer for the accuser will have a hay day with this in court if and when it happens.  Big Ben and Milledgeville police try using your heads for once, please!  This was stupid on so many different levels by the police.

Not only has the recent allegations on Big Ben hurt his reputation off the field, it has caused an uproar in the Steelers front office.  The Rooney family, owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers were extremely upset, disturbed and shocked by the recent accusations on their franchise quarterback considering that it’s the second time in less than a year.  However, when all is resolved and the decision is made by the courts on how to deal with this situation, it is rumored that Big Ben will have to sit down with Steelers personnel and hammer out some serious issues.  By no means will Roethlisberger get cut or demoted to the back-up role, but this could really strain what most considered a strong relationship between Ben and the Rooney family!  Good job Ben, keep up the good work!
