Miguel Cabrera says “No Mas Cervezas”

Posted: March 2, 2010 in MLB

It was the end of September in 2009 when the Detroit Tiger’s were “giving it everything” they had to hold onto possession of first place in the American League Central division. The attention of the Tiger players was focused solely on getting to the playoffs, but clearly the Tiger’s first baseman, Miguel Cabrera forgot what they were playing for! Cabrera decided that dedication and hard work could take a back seat to partying like a rock star until 5:30 a.m. by himself.  Well if it wasn’t bad enough getting taken to jail, the sun definitely wasn’t shining down on him when Tiger’s general manager, Dave Dombrowski was called to pick Cabrera up at the local precinct.  This is the equivalent of being caught by your mom or dad while having sex with your boyfriend or girlfriend…..ehhhh scary!

From what I would guess, things got pretty awkward when the two were driving home together and Miguel said with a drunken slur, “Geez David, well ummm you might read in tomorrow’s newspaper that I am a drunk and o yah I may have smacked my wife in the face a few times, but hey you know how those reporters can exaggerate things, right?  Soooo what I’m really trying to say is don’t worry about my blood alcohol level being three times the legal limit while I was attempting to drive home and don’t worry about where my head will be at for this big game against the Twins.” Well maybe it didn’t go exactly like that, but my guess is that after Miguel Cabrera wet the bed by going 0-4 and stranding six base runners, coach Leyland and GM Dombrowski were worried about the 26 year-old slugger.

Now nearly a year later, Miguel had decided he better clear the air before heading into spring training this season by making a statement that consisted of saying “You guys write in the paper ‘alcoholic,’ that’s not right.  I don’t know how to explain, but it’s not an alcohol problem.”  Alright everybody, lets just settle down for a second.  I mean, if Miguel says he’s not an alcoholic….well then he probably isn’t, right?  Miguel after all has a great track record for being an honest, down to earth person, right? (Quietly chuckling) Who is he kidding? I simply want to say “Thanks Miguel for wasting a headline on ESPN.com.”   It’s clear that Miguel may need more than rehab for alcohol addiction, maybe something like a psychological evaluation for being crazy!  I hope for the sake of Cabrera and the Tigers who spent more than a $126 million on this potential super star that he gets his life figured out and on track so that he can do what he was brought to Detroit to do….produce!
